The NL starting pitcher was none other than "The Rocket" Roger Clemens - all time win leader for the NBC Reds. His counterpart was Scott Kazmir who has yetto be defeated while wearing his home Royals jersey...
st Inn - Brian Roberts(Bal) leads off the game for the AL by sending a Clemens fastball deep into the ocean air. Clemens retires next 3 batters in order. Kazmir works a perfect bottom half.
nd Inn - This time Morgan Ensberg(KC) launches another Clemens offering into the seats to leadoff the inning. At this point, Clemens is deemed ineffective and removed in favor of Johan Santana(LA) who retires the next 3 in order, recording 2 K's. Kazmir works another perfect inning. AL leads 2-0.
rd Inn - In his second inning of work, Santana again works a 1-2-3 while striking out two. John Smoltz(Cle) returns the favor in the bottom half.
th Inn - Pedro Martinez(Pit) tosses a perfect inning and strikes out two. Brandon Webb(AZ) only strikes out one while doing the same. I know, this is starting to sound like the futures game...but wait...
th Inn - Roy Oswalt(Hou) tosses a 1-2-3 5th. Chien-Mien Wang(Atl) serves up the 3rd leadoff homer of the game to Derek Lee(Cin) that puts the NL on the board. After 5 Innings of all-star play the AL leads 2-1.
th Inn - Jake Peavy(SD) following the lead of his predecessors, strikes out two while retiring AL batters 1-2-3. Chad Cordero(Atl) does the same while striking out one.
th Inn - Billy Wagner(Hou) retires the side striking out two and walking Tony Clark(AZ). Hutson Street(Oak is elected to pitch the 7th. Disatser strikes for the AL. Street walks the first two batters of the inning, PH Kotsay(Fla) & PH Pujols(Stl), before being lifted in favor of Joe Nathan(SF). Nathan strikes out PH Giles(SD) but then walks PH Joe Mauer(Min) to load the bases. Nathan then walks PH David Wright(NYM) to tie the game. Nathan is lifted in favor Chris Carpenter(Bal). Carl Crawford(TB), batting 8th because of Kazmir, strolled to the plate for the NL. Crawford (who had recieved an impressive 14 of a possible 15 votes in the OF voting) did not disappoint his NL fans. Crawford ripped a triple into the gap to clear the bases and give the NL a 5-2 lead. The next batter, Todd Walker(Pit), who had entered the game in the 6th as a PH, hit a sac fly to score Crawford and expand the NL lead to 6-2. Carpenter struck out Lugo(Hou) to bring an end to the inning.
th Inn - Trevor Hoffman(SD), holding true to real-life all-star form, struggles by allowing a leadoff single to PH Pierre(Det) and then an rbi
double to PH Ryan Howard(Bos). With 3 right handed hitters due, the NL manager sticks with hometown Hoffy who settles in and retires the next 3 batters in order. In the bottom half, Dustin Hermanson(Atl) fails to keep the NL off the board allowing singles to Figgins(Tex) and Kotsay(Fla) and then loading the bases by walking Pujols(Stl). Brian Giles(SD) grounds into a DP but another runs scores for the NL. Mariano Rivera(Cin) pitched the last frame for the NL and surrendered a solo home run to Tony Clark, but that was all.
