2025 Colorado Rockies

Overview: The Rockies find themselves in a tough spot in 2025. They presently possess most of the pieces needed to field a competent team, however their weaknesses will make it difficult to rise to the top in a division full of quality clubs. Top to bottom, the Central promises to be the toughest division in the NL this season. There are no bad teams here, just differing degrees of good. I see the Rockies near the bottom of that spectrum, largely due to the fact that the holes which need filling on this roster are incongruent with draft availability.

Starting Pitching: This is one of the Rockies strengths. Led bu Zacl Littell, this group shouldn’t walk many hitters, though they’ll be a bit prone to the long ball when runners do find their way on base. Andrew Abbott, Pablo Lopez, and Aaron Civale should all perform well in their respective spots. Ryan Feltner figures for the 5-spot. Stripling and Chirinos provide additional options but they might make better trade bait or, in Stripling’s case, provide some help in the pen. The running game shouldn’t present too much trouble for this rotation, though who winds up calling signals for them could make a big difference. Grade: B

Relief Pitching: Colorado is one of a small group of teams who enjoy a fully staffed bullpen heading into the draft. Kevin Kelly appears the best bet for saves this season. He has tons of innings and walks no one. Beyond that Jhony Brito, Keegan Thompson, and Matt Moore are specialists of varying type which provide some versatility. Aaron Bummer and Wandy Peralta will likely pitch the middle innings while Brebbia and Stripling round things out. Though fully stocked, there isn’t much here to really get your attention. Grade: C+

Catchers: That’s cather singular, as in only 32-year old Eric Haase who can contribute roughly 100 Pas this season. This leaves a lot of nothing to say. The Rox will need to address this somehow, most likely via trade as there are very few appealing catchers in the draft. Grade D- (Colorado made a trade to acquire Nick Fortes after print of this heater)

Infield: Before examining further, I’d like to zoom the lens out a bit and focus on the entire offense. Left-handed hitters have been added to the endangered species list in Colorado. Tommy Edman (switch), Akil Baddoo, and Cade Marlowe are it. Collectively they’ll provide the Rockies with a total of roughly 375 PA’s in 2025. That’s a problem. If management fails to fix it, I view this as Colorado’s biggest stumbling block.
Now, onto the all-righty infield. One is tempted to conclude that this team crushes lefties. This is not true, with two exceptions. The first is first baseman and MVP candidate Yandy Diaz. Otto Lopez (acquired from the Blue Jays) will see most of the time at second and offers stellar defense and some speed. Ezequiel Tovar should hit 30+ homers at short and Paul DeJong’s best quality at third is his glove. Adding another utility player like Chris Taylor will be necessary, as he seems destined to help out in the outfield. Grade: B-

Outfield: Speed is a mixed bag in Colorado; half the lineup has it, the other doesn’t. Centerfielder Brenton Doyle brings a balanced blend of talents to the park every day, while protection pick Jordan Beck and speedster Tommy Edman project as splitting time in left. Randall Grichuk was traded for Fortes and Eddie Rosario , who takes over in right. JD Martinez will stabilize the lineup as the everyday DH. Doyle’s presence is the only reason I can justify the grade of C+.

Conclusion: The Rockies have some key holes to fill before Opening Day. The draft lacks depth in every area Colorado needs (left-handed hitting corner outfielders and catchers) which must be a point of frustration for management. How they navigate filling out the roster will be interesting to see. Given the shortcomings previously noted, it’s difficult to envision this club finishing better than fourth in a division crowded with talent.
