2025 Texas Rangers by

Overview: This roster is decorated with remnants of a recent championship run, but a reboot now seems in order. The pitching staff got together, took a selfie and sent it to management this offseason. They captioned it: Buy Stock in Pepto Bismol! Though their offense should produce at an above average clip, the upcoming campaign in Arington promises to be an arduous one. It will be a challenge for this team to finish better than the basement/

Starting Pitching: Ryan Weathers is the lone standout here and registers also as the rotation’s youngest member. Alec Marsh adds a bit more youth in the 2 spot. After that it gets old and ugly. Patrick Corbin, Carlos Carasco, and Walker Buehler all had sub-par seasons and aren’t getting any younger. Cody Bradford could chip in some quality starts but it might make more sense to run him out of the pen. Given the ages/performances of the latter half, I can’t give this group much better than a Grade C-

Relief Pitching: The bullpen is in a bit better shape than the starters, but not much. If Bradford is in the pen, he helps form a reliable trio along with Orion Kerkering and Tim Herrin that should close most of the late leads the Rangers are lucky enough to enjoy. After that comes a less inspiring arrangement of arms that, if nothing else, will be promised plenty of work this season. Grade: C

Catchers: I find myself unsurprised that the Rangers once more posses one of the league’s elite backstops. Like the Reds middle defense, the Rangers could trademark this organizational trend. The spirit of Pudge Rodriguez lives on in the form of Yainer Diaz. Though he may lack Pudge’s defensive prowess, Diaz swings a mighty stick from behind the plate and won’t hurt you on defense. And he’s only 26, so settle in folks. Jake Rogers won’t see much action behind him, but at least he won’t be a defensive liability when his number is called. Grade: A

Infield: Unfortunately, the pitching staff won’t be able to rely much on defense for help. It is almost universally average (this includes the outfield too). Josh Bell stabilizes the lineup while providing the lone defensive bright spot at first. Michael Massey and Nolan Gorman appear to be splitting duties at second but shortstop is a problem. Javier Baez offers about 2/3 of a season at well below average offensive production. Management is clearly seeking a longer term solution and may address this need with an early draft pick. Josh Jung and Anthony Rendon will spend the season filling in when the other winds up hurt at third base. Because the offense is a tick above average, I grade this group at a C+

Outfield: Team speed will be a big strength for the Rangers in ’25 and the outfield is the primary source. With the exception of Yelich, this is a young and promising group led by Homers Leody Taveras and protection pick Wyatt Langford. Yelich’s presence, though limited, will help elevate the offense above average. There’s no telling how many bases this team might swipe should management decide to make a project of it this season, which they might well do in order to jazz up what promises to be a dull season. Grade: B

Conclusion: Management has been recently quoted saying that they are uninterested in acquiring players over the age of 27. This makes sense as one of the Rangers’ biggest deficiencies is youth. It does feel like the roster could use a bit of a turnover as the Rangers seek a third NBC title. This season, however, Texas will struggle to finish fourth ahead of the Mets.
